Ай да Даррелл, ай да сукин сын
Aug. 15th, 2005 01:50 pmHoly shit! Вот, значит, как оно было на самом деле. Однако, Джерри тот еще тип оказался. Ну, забыл про невестку, бывает. Короче, никому верить нельзя.

«Durrell's selective account ignores the fact that he had moved to Corfu not only with his wife but also with his mother and three siblings. Several books by his brother Gerald, beginning with My Family and Other Animals (1956), paint an entirely different if not necessarily more accurate picture of the same period.»

«Two fortunate events occurred in 1935 that changed the course of his career. First, he persuaded his mother, siblings, and wife, Nancy Myers, to move to Corfu, Greece, to live more economically and to escape the English winter. Life in Greece was a revelation; Durrell felt it reconnected him to India. … Second, Durrell chanced upon Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer (1934) and wrote Miller a fan letter. Thus began a forty-five-year friendship and correspondence based on their love of literature …» и Миллер, кстати, гостил у них на Корфу в "белом доме".

«This is the Kalami Bay in Corfu, Greece where the "White House" is located. The White House itself is a two-story whitewashed building right on the shore (to the left of the center of the photograph). This house was rented by Lawrence Durrell and his wife, Nancy, and that's where they "absorbed" the love for that island. Larry's younger brother, Gerald, and their family often came here to stay "away from the civilization." »

«It was during this period that he met Nancy Myers, who was to be his first wife. He and she attempted several ventures in England before moving at the same time as Durrell's family to Corfu (as recounted rather amusingly, if somewhat inaccurately, in Gerald Durrell's autobiographical My Family and other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives, and Fauna and Family, and in more Lawrentian style in Prospero's Cell).»

«The northeast, now home to most of Corfu's upmarket holiday villas, is where Lawrence Durrell and his wife, Nancy, chose to live (although Gerald, with artistic licence, has his brother sharing the family home) … Lawrence and Nancy were freethinkers whose uninhibited lifestyle would have been impossible in '30s England. In Corfu, the couple thrived. Visiting writers, such as Henry Miller, would take up residence in their home at Kalami, a former fisherman's cottage called the White House. »
